Planning

The short
version.

The season you choose changes the trip as much as the region. The short answer: late April through May, and September into mid-October, are the windows we recommend — warm enough for the pool, the landscape at its best, and well below the price and the crowds of high summer.

July and August are the swimming-pool months: hottest, busiest, and most expensive, and the time the coast and the Argentario come into their own while the interior bakes. Most of our houses run from late March to early November.

In short

  • Late April–May and September–mid-October are the editorial picks
  • July–August are hottest, busiest and priciest — pool weather
  • The grape harvest (September) is the most atmospheric for wine
  • The coast and Argentario are at their best in high summer
  • Most houses open late March to early November

The Shoulder-Season Sweet Spots

Late April through May is green and mild, the wildflowers out and the temperature in the low twenties. September into mid-October is the harvest and the soft golden light, the cellars busy and the crowds thinning. Both give you the best of the weather and the landscape without the price and the heat of the peak — which is why they are the weeks we book first.

High Summer: Pool Weather and the Coast

Mid-July to the end of August is hot — comfortable indoors and at the pool, demanding in the middle of the day — and the busiest, priciest window. With a private pool it works well, especially for families tied to school holidays; and it is the season the Argentario and the Maremma coast are made for. Book nine to twelve months ahead for the best houses.

The Off-Season

From November to March a smaller number of houses stay open, and Florence, Siena and the walled towns are at their quietest and most atmospheric. It is not swimming weather, but it suits a cultural trip — and selected villas open for Christmas and New Year on request.
