What this category is
A Historic Estate, in the collection, is a working agricultural property that grew into a noble residence over the course of three or four centuries, a fattoria, a cardinal's retreat, a wedding gift between two Florentine families that stayed in one of them. The buildings are usually clustered: a primary house, a chapel, several outbuildings now restored as guest annexes, a cellar that began as a defensive structure. The land around them was farmed once and often still is.
What the category buys you is provenance. The walls are thick, the rooms have names, the kitchen has a fireplace large enough to roast a wild boar in. There is almost always a private chapel, occasionally consecrated. The pool, when it exists, was added later and discreetly.
These are the largest villas we represent. Most sleep fourteen to twenty-two in private bedrooms across two or three buildings, and they suit multi-generational trips, working family reunions, or the kind of milestone birthday that needs a long table for thirty under olive trees. Staff complements are correspondingly larger, a property manager, two housekeepers, a gardener kept busy year-round, a chef on the easiest call you can imagine.
We field the most enquiries for this category from June through September and from the week of Easter; if you are imagining a Historic Estate for high summer, book ten to fourteen months ahead.
