There are a great many Tuscan farmhouses for hire. There are not many at this level of quietly considered detail. The difference is in the things you do not notice — until you stay somewhere that has not bothered with them.

The owners, both architects, restored it for themselves and changed their minds about leaving Milan. It still has the feel of a private house lent for a fortnight rather than a rental.

The house
Architecture & restoration
An eighteenth-century podere, restored 2015–2017 by the owners. Original stone, original beams, lime-washed walls, terracotta floors. New windows and underfloor heating done invisibly. Four bedrooms, all en suite, all on the first floor.
The setting
Land, view, context
Three hectares of olives and a small vineyard the family work themselves. The house sits at the end of a kilometre-long white road, with no neighbour in sight. Pienza, eight kilometres; Montalcino, sixteen.
Living here
A slow week. Breakfast on the loggia. The pool, which is small and perfect, with a view of the Val d'Orcia that does not get old. Lunch in the garden. An afternoon in Pienza for the cheese and the walk on the walls. Dinner at La Bandita in Pienza or at home. The kind of holiday you book again the following year.
