Tenuta il Caprino, Chianti Classico

Winemaker's House

Tenuta il Caprino

Chianti Classico

The essence

A working sangiovese estate above Radda, owned by the same family for four generations. The wine is poured at lunch because it was made forty metres away. The house, restored in 2019 by Florentine architect Bianca Bellandi, retains every original cotto floor and every chestnut beam — and adds nothing that pretends to be older than it is.

The distinction

Why this villa
is in the collection.

  1. 01

One of fewer than a dozen Chianti Classico estates we believe a guest can stay at without compromise. The wine is exceptional, the house is exceptional, the family is present without being intrusive.

  2. 02

Bellandi's restoration is the quiet kind: structural work invisible, services concealed, every intervention reversible. The result reads as continuity rather than renovation.

  3. 03

The terrace at the south end, set into the hillside above the cellar, sees the sun set behind Monte Amiata two hundred days a year.

The house

Architecture & restoration

A late-sixteenth-century casa padronale built by the Ricasoli factor for his own family. Restored 2017–2019 under the direction of Bianca Bellandi (Studio Bellandi, Florence). Seven bedrooms across the main house and the adjacent limonaia, each with original frescoed cornices intact. Library with the family's collection of vintage Chianti maps. Working kitchen open to guests; chef on request.

The setting

Land, view, context

Eighteen hectares: nine of sangiovese, two of olives, the remainder woodland and meadow. Views west across the Pesa valley to the towers of Monteriggioni on a clear morning. The nearest neighbour is a kilometre by track. Radda in Chianti is twelve minutes by car; Florence, fifty.

Living here

Breakfast on the kitchen terrace, a long Italian one — tomatoes from the orto, bread from Forno Pasini in Radda, the family's olive oil. A walk through the upper vineyard before the heat. Lunch sent up from Osteria Le Panzanelle if you can't face cooking. The afternoon at the pool, which is set behind a wall of cypress and reads more like a Roman bath than a swimming pool. Dinner at Il Fedino in Lecchi, a twenty-minute drive through some of the best landscape in Italy.
