Golf courses in Tuscany and where to stay

The best golf for a Tuscany villa holiday is at Castiglion del Bosco near Montalcino, where Rosewood villa guests have exclusive access to a private 18-hole course. Near Florence, play Ugolino in northern Chianti; near Siena, Royal Golf La Bagnaia. Castelfalfi's course is closed for redesign and due to reopen in 2027. A good golf week starts with two decisions: which course you want to play, and what everyone else wants from the holiday.

For golf at the villa's doorstep, choose a Rosewood villa at Castiglion del Bosco. For a week that mixes golf with Florence or Siena, base yourself near Ugolino or La Bagnaia and drive to the course. Green fees and tee times are booked separately from the villa in every case.

Castiglion del Bosco: golf and an estate villa

Staying in a Rosewood villa at Castiglion del Bosco gives guests exclusive access to the estate’s private golf course, a particular benefit for a golf holiday. The 18-hole Tom Weiskopf course sits near Montalcino, with the villa as your base for the wider estate. Tee times must be arranged in advance and are subject to availability; a handicap certificate is required. Check green fees separately from the accommodation quote. See Rosewood’s golf information.

Castelfalfi: reopening in 2027

Castelfalfi connects naturally with a private villa holiday on the estate. Its official golf notice states that the course closed from January 2025 for redesign and maintenance. The course will reopen in 2027, with the date to be confirmed. Ask us to check the opening schedule against your travel dates when planning your stay.

The Castelfalfi villas remain a strong base for the wider holiday, with San Gimignano, Volterra and the estate's own vineyards nearby. If several rounds are essential before the course reopens, choose Castiglion del Bosco or a villa near Ugolino or La Bagnaia instead.

Ugolino: Florence and northern Chianti

Ugolino is the course for a Florence-based golf week: an 18-hole course on the Chiantigiana road between Bagno a Ripoli and Impruneta, about 20 minutes south of the city. The club traces its history to 1889, when British residents laid out Italy's first golf course in Florence; the present course at Ugolino opened in the 1930s.

Villas south of Florence and in northern Chianti are closest; see villas near Florence and our Chianti guide. Villas north or west of the city add a cross-town drive to each round.

Royal Golf La Bagnaia: Siena countryside

Royal Golf La Bagnaia is the course for a Siena-based week: an 18-hole, par-71 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., about 12 km southwest of Siena. Its official course information has the playing details and booking contacts.

Villas south and west of Siena are closest; start with villas near Siena. A round in the morning and an evening in Siena make a good pair; our day in Siena guide covers the city.

Estate villas for a golf holiday

For Castiglion del Bosco, start with Villa Gauggiole, which sleeps eight, and Villa Agresto, which sleeps twelve. The estate collection has the other Rosewood villas.

At Castelfalfi, La Pergola and Il Fienile each sleep six and Casale I Bianchi sleeps ten; they suit a 2027 golf stay once the course's reopening date is announced.

For several couples or a birthday group, the number of golfers is often much smaller than the party, so choose the villa for everyone. Our large-villa comparison shows bedroom and bathroom layouts.

A week that works for everyone

Choose one main golf area and leave days at the villa between rounds. While some play, others can join a cooking class, a wine tasting or a quiet day by the pool.

Golf in Tuscany is best from April to June and September to October, when the courses are green and afternoons are not too hot; pools are open from May to September. See private-pool villas and our October guide.

Florence is the closest airport for all four courses, and Pisa works well for Ugolino; for Castiglion del Bosco, Rome Fiumicino is the alternative when it saves a connection. Book a car or transfer with room for golf bags; see Tuscany's airports and our driving guide.

What to include in your enquiry

Tell us your travel dates, total party size, number of golfers, preferred courses and how many rounds you have in mind. Add any handicap, club-hire, lesson or transport requirements. For the villa, mention en-suite bedrooms, accessibility, pool heating and any celebration plans.

Tee times, green fees and club hire are booked with the course, separately from the villa; we can help coordinate both once your dates are set.
