Villas near Florence

The best way to see Florence is to sleep outside it. The houses below sit between twenty minutes and an hour from the city, close enough for a morning at the Uffizi and lunch back at the pool, far enough that your evenings are cypresses rather than scooters. Most are in the first hills south of the city or in Chianti, which puts Siena within reach on the same stay.

How the drive actually works

From the hills immediately south of Florence the drive is twenty to thirty minutes; from northern Chianti, forty-five. The thing nobody tells you is that the drive is the easy part and the parking is not: Florence's centre is a camera-enforced ZTL, so the practical pattern is to park at one of the ring garages, or take the train from Figline or Pontassieve when your villa is on that side. Our driving guide covers the ZTL rules and the fines that arrive by post six months later.

One city, or two

A villa near Florence is really a villa between Florence and Siena, which is the argument for Chianti: both cities become comfortable day trips from one base, with the wine road in between. If Florence is the only city you want, the closer hills, including the Dimora Ghirlandaio houses in the painters' own countryside, put you half an hour from the Duomo without any of the noise.

Frequently asked

How far are your villas from Florence?
Between twenty minutes and an hour by car. The houses in the hills immediately south of the city are the closest; the Chianti properties are around forty-five minutes, and put Siena within reach as well.
Can you visit Florence without driving into the city?
Yes, and we recommend it. Park at a ring garage outside the ZTL, or use the local train from Figline or Pontassieve. Driving into the historic centre without a permit triggers automated fines, one per camera passed.
Which airport is best for a villa near Florence?
Florence Peretola is closest at around thirty minutes to most of these houses; Pisa is about an hour and usually has more choice of flights. The full comparison is in our airports guide.
