Airports in Italy: The Main International Airports and Where They Serve

Italy's main international airports are Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP), followed by Venice (VCE), Naples (NAP), Bologna (BLQ), Pisa (PSA) and Florence (FLR). Choose the airport by the region you are visiting, not the city you are flying from: Italy is long, and the wrong airport can add half a day of driving.

Which Airport for Tuscany?

Pisa for most villa holidays, Florence for Florence and Chianti, Rome when it saves a connecting flight. Pisa has the widest choice of European flights and is about 30 minutes from Lucca. Florence airport is about 15 minutes from the city centre and 45 minutes from Chianti. From the US, most travellers fly into Rome Fiumicino: Florence is then about 1 hour 30 minutes by high-speed train, and the southern Maremma about 1 hour 15 minutes by car. Bologna is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Florence by motorway, and Perugia about an hour from Cortona.

Our Tuscany airports guide has drive times from each airport to every villa area, and a table of which airport to choose for where you are staying.

Flying Into One Airport and Out of Another

For a two-centre trip, an open-jaw ticket saves a long drive back. Common pairings are Rome in and Pisa or Florence out for Rome plus Tuscany, Venice in and Florence or Pisa out for Venice plus Tuscany, and Milan in and Pisa out for the lakes plus Tuscany. Check one-way car-hire fees if you are driving between them.
