Lucca is the most liveable city in Tuscany and the countryside around it holds the region's most distinctive villas: the ville lucchesi, aristocratic summer houses built in their own parkland from the sixteenth century onward. Most sit fifteen to thirty minutes from the walls, with Pisa half an hour away and the Versilia beaches about forty minutes. It is the practical choice for families.

Three reasons, in order. The city is flat, walled and walkable, which means an evening in Lucca is genuinely relaxing rather than a logistical exercise. The coast is close enough for a beach day without committing the whole week to the sea. And the drives are short: Pisa airport is thirty minutes, so arrival day does not end with a two-hour transfer and a car full of tired children.
The historic villas of the Lucca plain are a category of their own: formal gardens, lemon houses, avenues of plane trees, and rooms scaled for entertaining. Several in the collection have stood since the seventeenth century and are still lived in and maintained rather than preserved behind rope. They also make exceptional wedding properties, which is why our borgo near Lucca hosts celebrations of a hundred and more.
