Villas near Pisa

Pisa is most guests' first hour in Tuscany, and a villa within an hour of the airport turns a travel day into a holiday day: land mid-morning, an hour at the Field of Miracles, and the pool by mid-afternoon. The houses below are thirty to sixty minutes from arrivals, on the Lucca plain to the north or the Castelfalfi estate inland toward Florence.

The arrival day that works

Pisa's airport sits ten minutes from the city centre, which is unusual and useful. The pattern we suggest: land, collect the car or meet the driver, give the Miracles ninety minutes while the adrenaline of arriving carries you, take lunch by the Arno, and reach the villa by mid-afternoon with the whole first evening intact. The alternative, driving straight past and coming back later in the week, works too, and is the better plan on a Saturday in August.

North or inland

North of Pisa is the Lucca plain: historic villas in their own parkland, the walled city for evenings, the Versilia beaches at forty minutes. Inland to the east is Castelfalfi, a two-thousand-seven-hundred-acre estate with its own hotel, restaurants and spa, which suits guests who want everything on one property. San Gimignano and Volterra are half an hour from there.

Frequently asked

How far are your villas from Pisa airport?
Thirty to sixty minutes. The Lucca-plain houses are around thirty to forty; the Castelfalfi estate is a little under an hour.
Is Pisa or Florence the better airport for Tuscany?
Pisa, usually, for western and central Tuscany: more flights, easier roads out, and the drive to most of these houses is under an hour. Florence suits Chianti and the east. The comparison by region is in our airports guide.
Is it worth stopping in Pisa on the way to the villa?
For half a day, yes, and mostly on the way in rather than as a separate trip. Go before ten or after five, when the Campo dei Miracoli is not shoulder to shoulder.
