The essence
Casale Olivaio is a lovingly restored early nineteenth-century hay barn — a fienile — high on seven hectares of meadows and olive groves in the Chianti Fiorentino, half an hour from Florence. Taken whole, its two lodgings, Le Rose and Begonia, become one private farmhouse for up to ten: five bedrooms, two living rooms with fireplaces, two kitchens and two terracotta patios, with stone walls, timber and terracotta set off by carefully chosen furnishings. Twenty metres away, a salt-water pool looks out across the valley; beyond it are the owner's olive groves, which produce an award-winning, high-phenolic oil.

Le Rose, the larger lodging (106–129 m²), has an entrance hall and open kitchen, a living-dining room with fireplace, a guest WC and a ground-floor master bedroom with desk, library, home-theatre system and en-suite shower; upstairs are a second double and a twin (or double on request), both en-suite, with a picture window over the olive grove and valley. Begonia (72 m²) has a living room with fireplace, open kitchen and shower room on the ground floor, and upstairs a double and a twin sharing a bathroom. Together: five bedrooms, five bathrooms and a guest WC, 201 m² of living space. Air conditioning throughout, fast Wi-Fi, smart TVs, three audio systems, two washing machines and a dryer; cots and high chairs on request.

An eight-minute walk across the grove leads to the hamlet of Romita and its general store, and a few minutes on to Ristorante La Fattoria. Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, with supermarkets, shops and a pharmacy, is 4 km away; Florence 30–40 minutes by car, Siena 45–55, and Florence airport 41 km.
