At a glance: Villa Castellaro sleeps 13 in 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms in Chianti, Tuscany. Pool: private pool (15 × 7 m, 1.2–1.4 m deep) in the olive grove, heatable on request, with a heated hot tub for five and a pergola with changing rooms.

The essence

Villa Castellaro is a fifteenth-century manor in the Chianti hills above Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, built for the Sernigi — Florentine merchants and patrons of the arts — and later the country house of the Naldini del Riccio. The Corti family bought and restored it in the late 1950s and still live on the estate. Seven en-suite bedrooms, two living rooms and a long dining hall sit beneath beamed ceilings, all air-conditioned; outside are a stone terrace and a pergola for dining, a wood-fired pizza oven, modern sculpture in the olive grove, an open-air garden theatre and a 15-metre pool with a heated hot tub. A welcome dinner and daily cleaning are included.

The distinction

Why Villa Castellaro
is in the collection.

A true Renaissance house: built in the fifteenth century for the Sernigi, Florentine merchants and art patrons, and restored by the Corti family, who still live on the estate.

  2. 02

Seven en-suite bedrooms for up to thirteen — or add Casa Lilia, the four-bedroom guest house next door, for up to twenty-one.

  3. 03

A 15 × 7 m pool in the olive grove, heatable on request, with a heated hot tub for five and a shaded pergola lounge.

  4. 04

Long summer dinners under the pergola, pizzas from the wood-fired oven, and an open-air garden theatre that hosts concerts in summer.

  5. 05

A complimentary welcome dinner on arrival, a welcome basket and two hours of cleaning every day are included in the rate.

The villa

Architecture & restoration

The ground floor opens from an entrance hall into two living rooms with sofas and a great stone fireplace, a long dining hall under chestnut beams that seats the whole party, and a large, well-equipped kitchen with a marble island. There is also a study and a laundry. Seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, are spread across the house — doubles and twins with white linen, terracotta floors and windows onto the olive groves — sleeping eleven, with room for two more on extra beds. Every room is air-conditioned and screened. The cellar holds the estate's own wine and olive oil, paid for as you use them.

The setting

Land, view, context

On a quiet hillside two kilometres from Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, with its shops, cafés and supermarket, in the heart of Chianti Classico. The house is surrounded by its own garden, olive groves and vineyard views; Antinori's cellar is ten minutes away, San Casciano a short drive, and Florence, Siena and San Gimignano each around half an hour. Florence airport is 45 km, Pisa 80 km.
