At a glance: Casale di Sant'Andrea sleeps 12 in 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms in Cortona, Tuscany. Pool: private heated infinity pool (12 × 6 m, 1.4–2.4 m deep) among the olive trees, with an electric cover and a shaded pergola; open mid-May to mid-September.

The essence

Casale di Sant'Andrea is an imposing manor house in the hills between Cortona and Mercatale, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria, set alone in more than seventy acres of its own meadows, olive groves, woodland and a private lake. Restored by a renowned international interior designer, it keeps its oak ceilings, beams and stone doorways alongside deep sofas, antiques and family paintings: seven individually styled bedrooms — some with four-poster beds — sleep twelve, with freestanding and antique marble baths and large walk-in showers. A wisteria-hung loggia with a reclaimed-oak table for fourteen looks down over the olive groves to a heated infinity pool and the hilltop castles beyond.

The distinction

Why Casale di Sant'Andrea
is in the collection.

  1. 01

More than seventy fenced acres of its own — meadows, olive groves, a deer park, woodland walks and a private lake.

  2. 02

Restored by an international interior designer: oak ceilings, Roman capitals, antiques, four-poster beds and antique marble baths.

  3. 03

A heated 12-metre infinity pool sculpted into the olive grove, with a pergola and views to castles on the distant hills.

  4. 04

Fully looked after: a house manager, housekeeping six days a week, a welcome hamper and a complimentary light breakfast each morning.

  5. 05

A 60-foot drawing room, a study, a galleried sitting room and open fires in every sitting room — as good out of season as in summer.

The villa

Architecture & restoration

Two ancient Roman capitals lead from the spacious kitchen and dining room into the hall, whose double doors open onto the arched loggia with its tumbling wisteria, a table for fourteen and sofas. The 60-foot drawing room is furnished with understated grace; there is also a more intimate study and, upstairs, a galleried sitting room. Seven bedrooms, each styled individually with antiques, share six bathrooms with freestanding baths, antique marble baths and large walk-in showers. Two first-floor terraces — one off the master bedroom, one off the galleried hall — look out to castles on the distant hilltops. Outside are a ground-floor terrace and formal garden with a wall rill, table tennis on the old limonaia, boules and a badminton lawn. Air conditioning in all bedrooms, Wi-Fi, and Ortigia toiletries.

The setting

Land, view, context

Secluded on its own land in the hills between Cortona and Mercatale, where Tuscany meets Umbria. Mercatale, with a bakery, butcher and small supermarket, is 7 km (under 10 minutes); Cortona 27 km (35 minutes); Umbertide, for larger shopping, 18 km (20 minutes); Perugia 40 minutes. The Reschio estate and its restaurants are 2 km away, and the Girasoli winery and restaurant in Sant'Andrea five minutes.

Living here

A light breakfast of fruit, fresh pastries and bread brought up each morning, a swim in the infinity pool, lunch under the wisteria, a walk through the woods to the lake, and dinner cooked by Rosa — perhaps a pizza night from the villa's oven, a cookery class, or a gala dinner by chef Giancarlo Polito — with yoga or a massage under the loggia arranged by the house manager.
