The essence

Three kilometres from Montepulciano, Villa San Bartolomeo stands in five hectares of fenced private garden above the vineyards, olive groves and organic vegetable fields of its own working farm. Six identical queen bedroom suites, each en suite, sleep twelve across two floors joined by a lift; a twenty-five-metre infinity pool runs along the panoramic lounge, and below it lies the only private wellness centre in the Val d'Orcia — an indoor pool heated to thirty-eight degrees with hydromassage, sauna, hammam, sensory showers and chromotherapy. Breakfast is cooked by the villa's chef every morning.

The house

Architecture & restoration

Four hundred square metres over two floors, connected by both a lift and outdoor stairs. The entrance level opens into a panoramic living room with fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows, an indoor dining area, two fully equipped kitchens, a guest WC and the wellness centre with its heated indoor pool, sauna, hammam and sensory showers. Six identical bedroom suites — all queen beds, each with its own en-suite shower room — are split three on the entrance level and three above, every one with safe, hair dryer, bathrobes, flat screen and window views. Cots, high chairs and children's games are on hand; the wine cellar carries a selection from the estate's own enoteca.

Via di San Bartolomeo, three kilometres from Montepulciano's Renaissance streets and Vino Nobile cellars, on the villa's own farm of vineyards, olive trees and organic vegetable gardens. Pienza is twenty minutes, Montalcino forty-five, Siena and Florence roughly an hour and a half, Rome two and a quarter — a strategic base for the whole of southern Tuscany.
