The essence

A 1427 document from Bernardo di Bartolomeo Gherardi — whose name this house now carries — already describes this small farm in detail: two stone farmhouses the estate itself still calls Il Casolese, from casulae, Latin for "small houses". On the Vignamaggio wine estate outside Greve in Chianti, its nine bedrooms are dressed in Pietra Serena stone and murals by artist Simone Boni depicting the nine historic neighbourhoods of medieval Florence, opening onto an infinity pool that looks straight over the olive grove.

The distinction

Why Casale Gherardi
is in the collection.

  1. 01

History on paper: a 1427 document from Bernardo di Bartolomeo Gherardi already describes this farm's forests, soil, farmhouse and barn — the estate's own name for it, Il Casolese, comes from casulae, Latin for "small houses".

  2. 02

Nine bedrooms, each with murals by the artist Simone Boni depicting the nine historic neighbourhoods of medieval Florence, set in interiors finished with Pietra Serena stone.

  3. 03

An infinity pool overlooking the olive grove, on the working Vignamaggio estate — birthplace of Lisa Gherardini, believed to be Leonardo's Mona Lisa — with the estate's own vineyards, cellar and restaurant on the doorstep.

The house

Architecture & restoration

Nine bedrooms across two stone farmhouses, each with a sleeping area and its own chic lounge, finished in Pietra Serena stone and Italian design furniture, with murals by Simone Boni depicting Florence's nine historic neighbourhoods. A fully equipped open-plan kitchen and generous lounge give the whole group somewhere to cook and gather together.

The setting

Land, view, context

On the Vignamaggio estate outside Greve in Chianti, a few kilometres from the village of Panzano and its restaurants and boutiques. Florence is around forty-five minutes by car, Siena around an hour, and the estate's own vineyards, cellar tastings and restaurant are a short walk from the door.

Living here

Paths wind through a garden of strawberry trees, rosemary and jasmine to the infinity pool over the olive grove; the scenic terrace, shaded by a mulberry tree, is where breakfasts and dinners happen. In the evening, the whole group can gather in the open-plan kitchen and lounge, or walk over to the estate's own restaurant and cellar for a tasting.

Villa Erbavoglio and Casale Gherardi are two of three houses Vignamaggio rents on its own wine estate (the third, Il Prato, is not yet in our collection). Guests at either can arrange estate wine tastings, tours and restaurant dining, and — for a full buy-out — the estate can combine multiple houses for one large group.

The Vendemmia: Joining the Grape Harvest in Chianti

Vendemmia in Chianti is the working two weeks that decide a year. The 5:30am picks, the *cantina* at five in the afternoon, the dinner at the long table afterward. The editor's view of the wine country at work.
