At a glance: Villa Il Cellese sleeps 19 in 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms in Chianti, Tuscany. Pool: two pools: a long outdoor pool looking over the vineyards to Castellina in Chianti, with day beds, pool bar and outdoor kitchen; and a heated indoor–outdoor pool in the spa, swimming out through a stone arch, with sauna and hammam.
The essence
A hilltop estate outside Castellina in Chianti, rebuilt over two decades from ruins into a contemporary country house of 615 square metres, on nine hectares of organic land with its own vineyard. Ten bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, sleep nineteen — the Forno room on the ground floor, seven more upstairs and a two-bedroom loft with its own entrance and sitting room. Two pools: a long outdoor pool facing the vineyards and the village, and a heated indoor–outdoor pool in the spa, with sauna, hammam and gym. A pool bar and outdoor kitchen, a pizza oven, a games room and an open-air cinema; the family's winery is twenty minutes away. Breakfast every day and five chef's dinners a week are part of the stay.

The distinction
Nine hectares of organic land with its own vineyard — and the family's winery twenty minutes away, with barrel tunnels hand-carved into the hill (WWII shelters), a tasting room and a restaurant.
Ten bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, for up to nineteen — including a two-bedroom loft with its own entrance, sitting room and kitchenette.
Two pools — a long outdoor pool facing the vineyards and Castellina, and a heated indoor–outdoor pool in the spa with sauna, hammam and gym.
Staffed: daily continental breakfast, two hours' housekeeping each morning and, for stays of a week, a chef for five dinners.
A games room with pool table and console, an open-air cinema, a yoga platform and a helipad; Castellina in Chianti 10–15 minutes.
The villa
Entrance floor: a living room with fireplace, a dining room and a fully equipped kitchen, the spa — a heated indoor–outdoor pool, sauna and hammam — a gym and a games room with pool table, big screen and games console; the Forno bedroom, entirely on the ground floor, has a king bed, its own sitting area, walk-in wardrobe and an en-suite bathroom with an accessible shower. Upper floor: seven bedrooms — six doubles with king or super-king beds (two convert to twins, one has its own sitting area) and one single room — each with an en-suite shower room. The Loft, reached by a wide stairway and with its own entrance, has two en-suite double bedrooms either side of a spacious sitting room with kitchenette. Air conditioning and heating throughout; Wi-Fi; cots on request.
The setting
On a hill in the Chianti Classico countryside, about 8 km from Castellina in Chianti, with the vineyards falling away below and Castellina's skyline across the fields. Poggibonsi is 20 minutes, Siena and San Gimignano 30–40, Greve in Chianti about 35, Florence airport about 50–60. The family's winery and restaurant are 20 minutes away; the estate has its own helipad.

Chianti
Vendemmia in Chianti is the working two weeks that decide a year. The 5:30am picks, the *cantina* at five in the afternoon, the dinner at the long table afterward. The editor's view of the wine country at work.
