The essence
On the banks of the Greve river, inside the historic Vignamaggio wine estate, Villa Erbavoglio is a homestead of two stone farmhouses divided into four self-contained flats — nine bedrooms in all, for up to eighteen guests who want the privacy of their own kitchenette and living room alongside the company of the group. A simple, linear garden of apple, poplar and linden trees leads to a shared pool and solarium, with the estate's own vineyards, cellar and restaurant a short walk away.

The distinction
Four private flats across two stone farmhouses on the Greve riverbank, each with its own kitchenette and living room — real self-containment inside one shared estate, useful for multi-family groups who want company by day and separate front doors at night.
Set inside the working Vignamaggio estate — birthplace of Lisa Gherardini, believed to be Leonardo's Mona Lisa, and the filming location for Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing — with the estate's own vineyards, cellar and restaurant on the doorstep.
Rooms illustrated after the 16th-century botanist Gherardo Cibo, a billiards room, a long communal dining table for the whole group, and a garden pool shaded by apple, poplar and linden trees.
The house
Nine bedrooms divided across four flats in two stone buildings — the farmhouse and the converted barn (fienile) — each flat with two or three double rooms, private bathrooms, an equipped kitchenette and its own living room. The barn's own dining and living room, reached through a set of arched glass doors, seats the whole group under a high, beamed ceiling; a separate billiards room opens onto the garden. Rooms are decorated with graphics after the 16th-century botanist Gherardo Cibo.
The setting
On the Vignamaggio estate outside Greve in Chianti, on the banks of the Greve river, a few kilometres from the village of Panzano and its restaurants and boutiques. Florence is around fifty minutes by car, Siena under an hour, and the estate's own vineyards, cellar tastings and restaurant are all a short walk from the door.

Living here
Mornings on the terrace with coffee from the kitchenette, afternoons at the shared pool and solarium beneath the linden trees, evenings around the barn's long dining table or over a game of billiards. The estate itself is the day trip: a cellar tasting, a vineyard walk, or dinner at Vignamaggio's own restaurant, all without leaving the grounds.
Pricing

Villa Erbavoglio and Casale Gherardi are two of three houses Vignamaggio rents on its own wine estate (the third, Il Prato, is not yet in our collection). Guests at either can arrange estate wine tastings, tours and restaurant dining, and — for a full buy-out — the estate can combine multiple houses for one large group.

Chianti
Vendemmia in Chianti is the working two weeks that decide a year. The 5:30am picks, the *cantina* at five in the afternoon, the dinner at the long table afterward. The editor's view of the wine country at work.
