The essence
Villa Farfalla is a singular work of contemporary architecture in the first hills of Lucca — conceived by its owners, an architect and a designer, as a laboratory of light, marble and nature. Two hundred metres above the city, it commands an extraordinary panorama of Lucca and its walls. Clinging to a hill of white marble exposed across three luminous levels, the villa and its guesthouse total five hundred and twenty-five square metres of transparent, light-filled space organised around a spectacular sculptural staircase. Its crowning feat is a hydraulic 'butterfly' roof — the first in the world — whose wings open to cool the house and let you sleep beneath the stars. National Geographic named it one of Italy's most exceptional, ecological homes.

The distinction
An award-winning contemporary masterwork — designed by its owner-architects and named by National Geographic among Italy's most exceptional, ecological homes.
The world's first hydraulic 'butterfly' roof: 170m² of opening wings for natural cooling and sleeping under the stars, set around a sculptural marble staircase.
A panoramic 26-metre pool with hydromassage, a large terrace over Lucca, ten hectares of olive groves and woods, and a helicopter landing area on request.
The house
Six bedrooms and six bathrooms across the main villa and the Farfallina guesthouse — bright, transparent, and almost entirely custom-made by the owners, from the architecture to the lamps and sculptures. White marble runs through all three levels; iron shutters shade in summer and draw light deep in winter.
The setting
In the first hills around Lucca, two hundred metres above the city and ten minutes from it, set in ten hectares of olive groves and woodland with an extraordinary, uninterrupted view of Lucca and its walls.

Living here
A design-lover's retreat: open the roof to the night sky, swim the 26-metre pool with the city laid out below, dine on the great terrace — chef, concierge and the whole Lucchesia within reach, the coast and Florence not much further.

Lucca & Garfagnana
Pisa is most guests' first hour in Tuscany and almost nobody's destination. How to use the city properly: the Field of Miracles early, lunch by the river, and the villa by mid-afternoon.

Lucca & Garfagnana
Lucca, the only Italian Renaissance city you can walk around on its own walls. The Puccini birthplace, the rooftop terraces, the *vie* on a Saturday morning, and how to use the city as part of a Tuscan week.
