The essence
Casa Felice Matteucci is a gem of a Tuscan farmhouse on a beautiful estate of hill-terraced olive groves, overlooking a small lake with its own tree-shaded island reached by a wooden bridge. Seven luxurious en-suite guestrooms sleep up to fourteen. The sunny ground floor opens through a salon of comfortable sofas, a guest study, a grand domed dining room and a Tuscan kitchen; outside, a jasmine-covered gazebo and lawned gardens frame the floodlit pool. This was the home of Felice Matteucci, who invented the first internal-combustion engine here in 1854 — a blissful retreat steeped in la dolce vita.

Lucca & Garfagnana
Pisa is most guests' first hour in Tuscany and almost nobody's destination. How to use the city properly: the Field of Miracles early, lunch by the river, and the villa by mid-afternoon.

Lucca & Garfagnana
Lucca, the only Italian Renaissance city you can walk around on its own walls. The Puccini birthplace, the rooftop terraces, the *vie* on a Saturday morning, and how to use the city as part of a Tuscan week.
