The essence

Villa Controni sits below Monte Pisano on the southern edge of Lucca — a historic nineteenth-century Lucchese villa on an estate of hill-terraced olive groves, formal Italian gardens and pine-forest hilltops crowned with castle ruins. Twelve frescoed guestrooms, all en-suite, sleep up to twenty-four. Within are three living rooms, a study, a billiard room and a grand banquet hall; without, an arched loggia for shaded dining and a walled garden sheltering the pool. Panoramic views reach across Lucca and Nottolini's aqueduct. This was the summer villa of the noble Controni family — and the estate where Felice Matteucci worked on the combustion engine.

Elegantly frescoed and full of charm, the villa keeps its 19th-century atmosphere across grand reception rooms — three living rooms, a study, a billiard room and a banquet hall — with a shaded arched loggia for outdoor living. Full staff and a private chapel complete it.
