The essence
A century-old stone farmhouse among ancient olive trees on a hill between Florence and Siena, restored with its beams, brick arches and terracotta floors intact. It sleeps sixteen in the main villa, or twenty with the Poggiarello cottage: big stone living rooms with Tuscan fireplaces, a long dining table under the arches, a playroom with a big screen, and on the lower floor a private wellness centre — heated jacuzzi, sauna, massage bed and gym. Outside, a 16-metre pool with a mosaic whirlpool and cascades looks down over one of the loveliest valleys in Chianti.

Architecture & restoration
Ground floor: the old farmyard leads into a stone-walled hall with arches, beams and a Tuscan fireplace; the main kitchen, equipped to cook for twenty; and the La Casetta suite — its own sitting room with fireplace, kitchenette and a double bedroom with shower room. First floor: a large lounge with fireplace and seven bedrooms — Il Fattore, La Massaia, Il Sensale, Il Guardia, Il Garzone (with a large balcony) and Il Contadino (with a loft), all queens with en-suite showers, plus the twin Il Treccone and the tower room Il Capoccio, which share a bathroom. Lower floor: the Caldarium spa with heated jacuzzi, sauna, Shiatsu massage bed, gym and showers. A TV and playroom with board games. For twenty guests, the Poggiarello cottage adds a kitchen, a living room with fireplace and two bedrooms sharing a bathroom. Air conditioning and mosquito nets throughout.

On the hills of Barberino Tavarnelle, in an oasis of centuries-old olive trees, cypresses and vineyards, halfway between Florence and Siena. Tavarnelle's shops and restaurants are a few minutes' drive; San Gimignano, Castellina and Greve are within half an hour, Florence and Siena about 40 minutes.
